Extremely rare, extremely fine hand-knotted Kazak. 100% hand-spun Ghazni sheep wool on cotton foundation. Size 2.92 × 1.80 m. About 200,000 to 360,000 knots per square meter.
What Ghazni wool is
Ghazni wool comes from mountain sheep around Ghazni. The fiber is long, strong, and full of natural lanolin. Hand-spun, it drinks vegetable dye deep and keeps a quiet living sheen. Underfoot it is warm and springy. Fine knotting at this size is rare: every palmette stays sharp across nearly three metres.
What the design is in the real world
A night garden held in geometry. Hooked palmettes, rosettes, and angular blossoms stand in ranks on an indigo-teal field. The red border is the garden wall, walked with gold palmettes. This is a formal room carpet: readable from the door, rewarding up close.
What the design is in the inner world
Hooks enclose. Rosettes are hearths. The dark field is depth. Rank and repeat say creation has a center. When the border turns at all four corners, the weaver has closed the world of the rug, the house is whole.
Why it mattered to weavers and the culture
Fine Kazak workshop work is a high craft: Caucasian grammar, mountain wool, a loom team that can hold a three-metre repeat. Corner resolution is pride. Ghazni wool is chosen because the drawing deserves a fiber that will outlast the first owner.

Material
Wool
Hand-spun sheep’s wool is springy and warm. It holds dye inside the fibre, recovers after it is walked on, and wears slowly, over decades rather than years.
The foundation, the grid of threads the rug is woven on, is cotton, which keeps the rug flat and square.

Foundation
The warp and weft: the grid of threads the pile is knotted onto. A cotton foundation keeps a rug flat and square; a wool one moves with the pile.

- Hand-Knotted
Weave
Hand-knotted rugs have a pile made of individual knots tied by hand around the warp. Flatweaves such as kilims are woven with no pile, so they are thinner and often reversible.
