Rug care

Looked after, a rug outlives its owner

Seven habits that keep a hand-knotted rug in good order for decades. If in doubt, ask us first.

Looking after your rug

  • Vacuum regularly

Use a vacuum without a beater bar, and never run it across the fringe.

  • Turn it

Turn the rug once or twice a year so sun and footfall age it evenly.

  • Mind the sun

Keep it out of constant direct sun, which lightens colour unevenly over time.

  • Blot spills at once

Use a clean white cloth and cold water. Do not rub, and do not use household carpet cleaners.

  • Use an underlay

It stops slipping, protects the back and cushions the pile.

  • Have it washed professionally

Every few years, by a specialist in hand-knotted rugs.

  • Store it rolled

Never folded. Wrap it in breathable cotton and keep it somewhere dry.

  • Not sure? Ask us

If you are unsure about a mark or a product, write to us before you act.
