Size 296 × 212 cm. Wool on wool, asymmetrical Persian knots, vegetable dyes.

What the wool and knots are

Wool on wool: pile and structure both sheep’s wool. The Persian knot makes a dense, fine, flexible weave. After eighty years in storage the drawing is still clear because the yarn was packed with care.

What the design is in the real world

A Persian garden. Ivory medallion at center, the pool or pavilion. Palmettes and blossoms grow across a madder-red field. Ivory corners open to light. The green border is the outer wall. This marked the best room: guests, tea, standing shown without speech.

What the design is in the inner world

Paradise underfoot. Water at the center. Life moving outward. A wall that keeps the garden whole. Red is celebration. Ivory is light. Green is living hedge. Both ends match so the garden is complete from either door.

Why it mattered to weavers and the culture

An unused 1945 carpet is a life’s work that waited. Workshop skill shows in a medallion that sits true and a border that turns. In many houses the loom was as serious as the kitchen. This piece held the year it was finished until the day it was first unrolled.

One of a kind.
